Perhaps one of the most unusual artists of the twentieth century, Yma Sumac is well remembered and highly regarded today. Her recordings for Capitol during the 1950s are indeed classics, by any definition. With a range of four-and-a-half octaves Yma's voice has rarely been equaled. To the tune of Hollywood-style versions of traditional Incan and South American folk songs, Yma would sing, growl, chirp and produce sounds for which there are no words to describe. The results are truly amazing for the first-time listener. You won't believe your ears.
Husband Moises Vivianco arranged much of her music throughout her career, although she did work with other orchestra leaders, such as lounge legend Les Baxter. This particular CD contains two of her classic 1950s albums, Voice of the Xtabay and Inca Taqui -- Chants of the Incans, the former conducted by Baxter, the latter by Vivianco. Both are excellent. If you haven't heard Yma Sumac before it is an experience, to say the least.
