Jo Stafford's stay at Capitol Records during the 1940s was one of her most productive, featuring a string of international hits. This collection of material comprises a well-rounded selection of popular songs of that era. Ballads like ''Autumn Leaves'' and ''Haunted Heart,'' memorable songs like ''Over the Rainbow'' and ''La Vie en Rose,'' and the WWII standard ''I'll Be With You in Apple Blossom Time'' remain popular even today, and Jo's version of these songs will always rank among the top.
This CD is a companion to Jo's Capitol Collector's Series entry, which features many of her top chart hits of the day. Where that collection does a better job presenting her versatility, with a wider range of numbers, this CD sticks more closely to her pop recordings, and thus presents Jo at a smoother and easier-to-listen-to pace. It's quite a pleasant album as well as another fascinating look at the career of one the century's greatest singers.
