Carmen Miranda

South American Way

Jasmine

This collection of Carmen Miranda songs contains some of her most popular American recordings, from traditional numbers like 'Alo Alo'' to grand Hollywood productions like ''Weekend in Havana.'' Featured are such memorable tunes as ''South American Way,'' her first American hit from the musical The Streets of Paris, and ''Mama Eu Quero,'' from the film Down Argentine Way. Also included are two collaborations with the Andrews Sisters, ''The Wedding Samba'' and ''Cuanto La Gusta.'' All of the songs are are very entertaining. Some of them are campy, like ''Yipsee-I-O,'' but of course that's part of their charm. Miranda herself was campy, a caricature of what Americans expected a Brazilian to be.

All in all, this is a great collection. If you're looking for the American Carmen Miranda, this CD will do quite nicely.
