This collection of Peggy Lee hits is comprised of material from her first contract with Capitol Records, from 1945 to 1950, and aptly demonstrates the wide range of her career. Peggy is well-known for her eclectic fare. She was unafraid to tackle different styles. Her only pre-requisite was that she believed in the song and understood what it meant. This attitude towards her singing is what helped make her one of the century's greatest.

The first four songs on the album are standard post-war pop fare and find Peggy somewhat reserved in her singing. Her exuberance emerges for the rest of the album however, and she takes us on an international journey as well. Two of the highlights of the album are the Brazilian numbers, ''Mañana (Is Soon Enough for Me)'' and ''Caramba! It's the Samba,'' both performed with Carmen Miranda's Brazilians. Both tracks also feature blow-ups at the beginning. ''Chi-Baba, Chi-Baba'' finds her leaning towards the Italian, and she goes cowboy for ''Ghosts Riders in the Sky.'' Peggy settles into straight-forward jazz on several numbers, including ''All Dressed Up with a Broken Heart,'' and teams up with Mel Torme for ''The Old Master Painter,'' a folky jazz number. She also tackles two tunes from Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific, ''Bali Ha'i'' and ''I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair.''

Excellent liner notes round out this wonderful compilation of early Peggy Lee hits. A must-have for any Peggy Lee collection.
