Betty Grable had one of the finest voices in Hollywood during the 1940s, but unfortunately she was under contract to 20th Century Fox. Fox discouraged their stars from working for recording companies, so Betty never had the opportunity, as did other celebrities of that era, to capitalize on both her vocal and acting talents. This unfortunately leaves no wealth of recording material by which to remember her. Luckily we have her many musicals, and Jasmine Records has assembled a collection of Betty's vocal work from those films in the form of The Pin-Up Girl.
This two-disc collection features selections from Betty's earliest popular musicals, films such as Springtime in the Rockies, Moon over Miami, Song of the Islands and Down Argentine Way. These songs are lifted directly from the soundtrack. The sound quality is excellent though. Some tracks have been edited to feature only Betty's section of a multi-part song, such as ''Pan American Jubilee,'' from Springtime in the Rockies, (which also features Carmen Miranda in the full-length version), but all in all this is a truly excellent CD. Betty's charm and personality shine through on each song, and even if you have never seen her movies you really begin to understand what it was that made her such a star.
Recommended for fans of Betty Grable or for those who love the golden age of Hollywood musicals.
