Irving Berlin's music has probably been featured in more Hollywood films than any other composer in history. This 25-song collection of material from various soundtracks only captures a small portion of Berlin's film legacy but gives a broad overview of his long and productive career.
Some tracks were taken from Berlin musicals, others were simply Berlin songs featured in a particular film. The latter category includes Clark Gable's interpretation of ''Puttin' on the Ritz'' from the 1939 film Idiot's Delight, to which Gable gave the only dance performance of his career. Al Jolson's version of ''Blue Skies'' is from the first feature-length talkie The Jazz Singer, marking Berlin's very early entry into Hollywood. And Marilyn Monroe's wonderful ''After You Get What You Want, You Don't Want It'' from There's No Business Like Show Business is a unique gem. Featured also are several songs from the popular musical Annie Get Your Gun, starring Betty Hutton and Howard Keel. Fred Astaire appears on several tracks, being Berlin's favorite performer to debut new material. Judy Garland and Ethel Merman are also featured, with Merman giving a wonderful performance on Heatwave.
A great collection of Berlin soundtrack material.
