The Andrews Sisters are one of the most-loved and best-remembered artists of all-time. Their unerring harmony and eclectic material made them the best-selling female group ever, a title they still hold today, and this compilation of songs from their period at Decca pretty much sums up their career.
Opening with their first big hit, ''Bei Mir Bist Du Schon,'' from 1937, this two-disc set runs through popular material from the wartime years and into the post-war period that saw them team up with other noted artists in a series of duets. Classics such as ''Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy'' and ''Rum and Coca Cola'' showcase the sisters doing what they did best, delving into rhythms that were not part of the typical music fare and adding their own unique harmony to the blend, in this case boogie-woogie and calypso. Other numbers such as ''I'll Be with You in Apple Blossom Time'' and ''Don't Sit under the Apple Tree'' were wartime favorites, reminding soldiers of their wives and sweethearts back home. Also featured are seven of the sisters' famous duets with Bing Crosby. Never has there been a better pairing. The chemistry produced between these artists is readily apparent on numbers like ''Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive'' and ''Don't Fence Me In.'' (The complete collection of Andrews Sisters/Bing Crosby duets is available on the two CD set Their Complete Recordings Together.)
After the war ended the sisters popularity began to wane as the country's musical tastes changed. To offset this, Decca teamed them with other popular artists. Duets with Danny Kaye, the superb ''Civilization'' and the goofy ''Woody Woodpecker,'' worked quite well, as did a pairing with guitar virtuoso Les Paul on ''Rumors Are Flying.'' ''Cuanto La Gusta,'' with Carmen Miranda, is a classic. Other numbers feature such artists as Burl Ives, Dick Haymes and Guy Lombardo.
This is the perfect CD to own if you only want to own one collection of Andrews Sisters' songs. Great liner notes round out the package.
