Orchestra leader Sterling Young grew up on Catalina Island off the coast of southern California. He studied violin as a child and at age 19 joined Ted Dahl's outfit. In 1935 Young formed his own sweet orchestra. The new group quickly became popular, especially with the Hollywood celebrity crowd. Bobbie Ennis was the female vocalist. She later became Young's wife. During the early 1950s the orchestra played in Las Vegas.
