Pianist Ike Carpenter led a ten-piece orchestra during the 1940s and 1950s. With arrangements inspired by Duke Ellington, the group often performed specialty numbers. Their best remembered recording is ''Pachuko Hop'' with trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. Carpenter's orchestra also worked with comedic star Jim Hawthorne.
